Impact Advisory Council
Richard is a seasoned leader in philanthropy, impact investing, corporate social responsibility, and community development. He has garnered over 30 years of combined experience at The Russell Family Foundation, the Levi Strauss Foundation, and Levi Strauss & Co. where he played major roles in breakthrough social change initiatives. In the 1980s before entering philanthropy, he worked in the San Francisco Bay Area in women’s reproductive health, teen family planning, and youth development.
In the 1990s at Levi Strauss & Company and the Levi Strauss Foundation, Richard played a lead role in the design and implementation of the Company’s Global Sourcing Guidelines, the first-ever standards for responsible manufacturing in the apparel industry. He researched, designed, and launched Project Change, an anti-racism funding initiative of the Levi Strauss Foundation. He also served as the executive director of the Levi Strauss Foundation with global grantmaking in 40 countries.
As the CEO of The Russell Family Foundation from 2000 to 2020, Richard served as a leading advocate for impact investing as a founding steering committee member of Divest-Invest Philanthropy (fossil fuel divestment); the founding board chair of Canopy (a regional impact collaboration); and an advisory board member for the founding of Confluence Philanthropy. Upon leaving The Russell Family Foundation, Inside Philanthropy named Richard in its 2019 Awards the “Foundation President We’ll Miss the Most” for having “been a trailblazer in such areas as equity and impact investing.”
Richard is a current board member of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation; with past board service on the Council on Foundations, Philanthropy Northwest, and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy.
Richard is a frequent speaker, writer, and facilitator on matters of social change in communities, philanthropy, and impact investing.
